Consumers

Helping Scottish homes minimise the quantity of rubbish they produce.

Home composting is recognised as one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing the amount of waste put out by householders for collection.

WRAP Scotland will be continuing to work in partnership with local authorities and SWAG to distribute home composting bins to households, as well as developing a network of Master Composters, with the support of the CRNS.

Currently, we estimate that 650,000 tonnes of household food waste is produced every year in Scotland, the majority of which is sent to landfill. WRAP Scotland will be supporting the further implementation of Love Food Hate Waste. This household food waste prevention programme was established during 2007 in partnership with SWAG, to deliver significant changes in consumer behaviour.

WRAP Scotland will also be supporting a "Know your Compost" campaign to promote the use of compost, including activities for Compost Awareness Week, and Gardening Scotland. It will be delivered in an integrated way with the consumer facing campaign work being delivered by SWAG.

    Home Composting

Composting at home is a great way to dispose of your kitchen and garden waste. Your kitchen and garden waste breaks down to produce compost to help your garden grow.

Most of us don't realise the amount of food we throw away. Over a third of the food we buy in Scotland is thrown directly in the bin and at least half of this could have been eaten.
