Why is WRAP Scotland's work important?

Scotland's National Waste Strategy supports Scotland's share of the UK's obligations under EU waste law. It has resulted in a rapid expansion of recycling and recovery of waste, diverting it from landfill.

However there remain a number of challenges, which require Government support and intervention:

  • The need to prevent increases in waste, particularly packaging and food waste.
  • The achievement of higher recycling/composting rates, which requires:
    a) appropriate behavioural change on the part of individuals in households and business, and
    b) efficient, effective and comprehensive collection schemes.
  • Investment in more material reprocessing capacity particularly in respect of bio-degradable waste if increasing amounts of this recyclate are not to be landfilled.
  • The development of a 'healthy' competitive market in the reprocessing of materials including the provision of appropriate pricing information.
  • The encouragement of procurement/purchasing of products using recycled content.
  • Tackling these challenges will provide a solid base for delivering a resource efficient, low carbon and ultimately 'zero waste' Scottish society.

For WRAP, these challenges are captured in our first Scottish Business Plan, which covers the period from April 2008 to March 2011 and outlines our plans and target outcomes for the next three years. These are designed to support the Government's 'Greener, Wealthier and Healthier Scotland' strategic objectives
